Initially constructed and subsequently expanded, the Tom Bevill Energy, Mineral, and Material Science Research Building was the University of Alabama’s inaugural facility dedicated exclusively to research. Now serving multiple purposes, the approximately 217,000-square-foot, three-level building includes laboratories, classrooms, conference rooms, offices, lounges, and storage areas. The laboratory space totals nearly 17,000 square feet, including 1,000 square feet designated for Class 100 and Class 1000 clean rooms. In recent years, the main offices for both the Department of Geological Sciences and the Department of Geography and the Environment have relocated to the second floor of the Bevill Building.
